I love lilies. The flower, and the name in all of its forms (Lily, Lilly, Lillian, Lillian etc.). You see, my Grandmother’s name was Lily and she was a vibrant storyteller. After she passed, I became slightly obsessed with all things Lily. The “O” stands for Ohio and represents, to me, a part of the Midwest. A few years ago, on the first day of class one of my History professors (African American Migrations) asked us to introduce ourselves based on our geographic roots. It was a concept that I was unfamiliar with until that time. I never realized how important it was for me to note my Midwestern roots, especially as an African American woman. I am descendent of two people who left the land nurtured by their ancestors to move north. Continue reading

As I get older, I find myself understanding things that were unclear to me as a child. On That 70’s show, they weren’t just hanging out at a table in the basement being goofy, but smoking marijuana (who knew?). NEXT’s song “Too Close” is about pure filth, not the seemingly innocent song that they performed on an episode of Sister Sister*. Reverend Dr. Reuben Gregory from Amen was a narcissistic jerk who I doubt ever loved Thelma Frye. The list of things I perceived differently as an adult is endless, however, one stands out the most. Learning to Mind My Business

I am a work in progress.

I eat too many French fries, spend an embarrassing amount of time on the internet, and spend an even more embarrassing amount of time and money on books. However, the main problem I am writing about today is my inability to keep other people’s business out of my mouth. No, I’m not talking about gossiping about the people I know in real life ( I don’t do that) but about those who I don’t know, i.e.,. Celebrities.
